Key Characteristics of High-Voltage Silicon Particles

The voltage withstand capability of high-voltage silicon pellets is limited. Multiple silicon pellets are connected in series and manufactured into a single device. As a high-voltage rectification component, this device is known as a high-voltage silicon pellet (high-voltage silicon stack). In high-voltage circuits, it functions similarly to a diode. The following section introduces the main characteristics of high-voltage silicon pellets.

A high-voltage silicon pellet contains multiple high-voltage rectifier diodes connected in series. During testing, its forward and reverse resistance values can be measured using the R×10K range of a multimeter. For a normal high-voltage silicon pellet, the forward resistance should be greater than 200 kΩ, while the reverse resistance should be infinite. If the forward resistance measurement is normal but the reverse side shows a certain resistance value, it indicates that the high-voltage silicon stack has experienced soft breakdown.

Another testing method is based on the rectification function of high-voltage silicon pellets. Set the multimeter to the 250V or 500V DC voltage range, then connect the high-voltage silicon pellet in series with a 220V AC power supply. Due to the rectification effect, the deflection of the multimeter pointer reflects the average current value after half-wave rectification. Therefore, the high-voltage silicon stack and the measuring instrument together form a half-wave rectified AC voltmeter.

When the tested high-voltage silicon pellet is connected using the forward connection method, a multimeter reading above 30V indicates that the component is qualified. When connected using the reverse connection method, the pointer should deflect in the opposite direction. If the pointer does not move, the internal structure may be short-circuited. In this case, current should be prevented from passing through the multimeter, as the component may have been damaged. During a short-circuit test, AC voltage can be directly applied. However, because the AC frequency is 50 Hz, the multimeter pointer cannot respond quickly enough, so a multimeter set to the DC voltage range will remain at the zero position.

Therefore, to determine whether a high-voltage silicon pellet has a short circuit or an open circuit, simply set the multimeter range switch to the 250V or 500V AC voltage range. If the reading shows approximately 220V AC, it indicates that the tested high-voltage silicon stack is short-circuited. In this situation, the reading in the DC voltage range will be 0V.
