Key Points About High-Frequency High-Voltage Diodes

High-frequency high-voltage diodes are electronic components with two electrodes that allow current to flow in only one direction. They can also be used as electronically adjustable capacitors. Most diodes have current directionality, which is commonly referred to as the rectification function. The basic function of a diode is to allow current to flow in one direction only (known as forward bias) while blocking current flow in the opposite direction (known as reverse bias). Therefore, a high-frequency high-voltage diode can be regarded as an electronic check valve.

High-frequency high-voltage diodes are one of the most commonly used electronic components. Their main characteristic is unidirectional conduction, meaning that current can only flow through the diode in one direction. When measuring a diode with a multimeter, if the reverse resistance is low, it indicates that the diode may be damaged. If the reverse resistance is high, the diode is considered to be in good condition.

A high-frequency high-voltage diode is essentially a junction silicon diode operating in the reverse breakdown region. During the manufacturing process, it is designed with low-voltage breakdown characteristics. The reverse breakdown voltage of a Zener diode remains relatively constant. By connecting a current-limiting resistor in series within a voltage regulation circuit, the current flowing through the Zener diode after breakdown can be maintained below the allowable limit. As a result, the breakdown state can continue for a long period without damaging the diode.

A trigger high-frequency high-voltage diode, also known as a DIAC, is a symmetrical two-terminal semiconductor device with a three-layer structure. It is commonly used to trigger bidirectional thyristors (TRIACs) and provide overvoltage protection in electronic circuits.

A high-frequency high-voltage diode is a semiconductor device with surge absorption capability. It has an extremely fast response time, reaching the sub-nanosecond range. Therefore, when a circuit receives a sudden high-energy transient surge, the diode can effectively suppress the excessive energy. By absorbing instantaneous high currents and clamping excessive voltage levels, it protects downstream components and circuits from damage.

High-frequency high-voltage diodes can be divided into two types: unidirectional diodes and bidirectional diodes. Unidirectional diodes are mainly used in DC circuits, while bidirectional diodes are primarily used in AC circuits. In circuit applications, they are usually connected in parallel with the protected circuit. Engineers can further compare available SMD diode types by package size, recovery time, current rating, and reverse-voltage capability. Once the transient voltage exceeds the normal operating voltage of the circuit, the TVS diode enters the avalanche breakdown state and provides an ultra-low-resistance path for the transient current, preventing damage to the protected components or equipment.

Due to their excellent transient protection performance, TVS diodes are widely used in ESD-sensitive circuits and overvoltage protection applications. When a unidirectional TVS diode is connected to a circuit, its polarity must be installed opposite to the polarity of the power input to ensure proper circuit operation.
